Médico alemán. Fue el primero en aislar el bacilo del
ántrax, observar su ciclo vital y desarrollar una inoculación preventiva contra él, y también el primero en demostrar una relación causal entre un bacilo y una enfermedad. Perfeccionó técnicas de cultivos puros, basándose en los conceptos de
Louis Pasteur. Aisló el agente de la
tuberculosis y estableció su papel en la enfermedad (1882). En 1883 descubrió el organismo causal del
cólera y su forma de transmisión. También desarrolló una vacuna contra la
peste bovina. Los postulados de Koch siguen siendo fundamentales para la patología: el organismo causal debe encontrarse siempre en animales enfermos, nunca en los sanos; debe desarrollarse en cultivos puros; el organismo cultivado debe enfermar a un animal sano; se debe aislar nuevamente del animal que enfermó y volver a cultivarlo y seguir siendo el mismo. En 1905 se le otorgó el Premio Nobel y es considerado uno de los fundadores de la bacteriología.
